Creating the AI-Empowered Classroom
Insight, a new LMS-integrated feature of PowerNotes, gives instructors the option to decide how and when to use AI in the classroom, along with an Insight score that measures students' work against their final submission.
How we think about AI in the classroom
We believe that AI writing is here to stay, and rather than fighting a battle we feel we’ll inevitably lose, we’re embracing its potential. There’s no denying that ChatGPT and other AI language models have revolutionized modern-day writing. Educators around the world have been presented with a unique and novel challenge - how can you know if a student used AI to accomplish their assignment? Are essays and research papers a thing of the past?
PowerNotes Insight provides a behind-the-curtain view needed to verify student engagement, all while helping them learn and work efficiently.
Students use PowerNotes to quote, annotate and organize the research that forms the basis of their writing. This work is documented by PowerNotes in a way that streamlines rather than intrudes on the learning process, yielding a number of benefits for both students and teachers. By expanding the method of authentication to include the research process, rather than the essay alone, we remove the dangers of false positives when identifying academic dishonesty.
Undoubtedly, there will be systems built to try to identify AI-generated content. Â There will always be false positives, either due to technological limits, or because some students happen to write in a style that has AI-like characteristics. If we are able to examine the writing and research process, rather than just the final artifact, then both students and teachers are protected.
Introducing the PowerNotes Insight score
Our Insight score is calculated based on the work students put into PowerNotes: highlights, annotations, organizational structure, and the time it took to do all of those things. We compare this body of work against the student’s submitted paper, and a score is generated based on how correlated the two are. The higher the score, the greater the correlation.

We compare student inputs against the final paper and generate a PowerNotes Insight score.
Power to the process.
PowerNotes sets itself apart with features focused on meaningful student engagement throughout the reading, research, analysis, and writing process.
Instructional Scaffolding
PowerNotes provides a pedagogically sound framework and efficient workflows for students, instructors, and researchers.
Rooted in Academia
Our team is working with leading academic institutions to develop Insight and to ensure that it meets the needs of the academic community now and into the future.
Critical Insights
Our patent-pending algorithm will provide educators with an Insight score so they can quickly determine which projects may need to be looked at more carefully. Projects with low scores will be flagged for review.
Explore Proof-of-Work
Educators can quickly assess a project's research and writing history to provide evidence of potential authorship issues. These histories can be referenced during academic code violation conversations.
Moving Forward Responsibly
We understand that AI and the idea of its use in academia can be polarizing and intimidating. We allow educators to choose exactly when and how AI is used in their coursework.
Cheaters Beware
Once students know that educators have a means of viewing coursework engagement, many will weigh the risks and consequences of cheating.
