Creating the AI-Empowered Classroom

Insight, a new LMS-integrated feature of PowerNotes, gives instructors the option to decide how and when to use AI in the classroom, along with an Insight score that measures students' work against their final submission.

How we think about AI in the classroom

think

We believe that AI writing is here to stay, and rather than fighting a battle we feel we’ll inevitably lose, we’re embracing its potential. There’s no denying that ChatGPT and other AI language models have revolutionized modern-day writing. Educators around the world have been presented with a unique and novel challenge - how can you know if a student used AI to accomplish their assignment? Are essays and research papers a thing of the past?

PowerNotes Insight provides a behind-the-curtain view needed to verify student engagement, all while helping them learn and work efficiently.

Students use PowerNotes to quote, annotate and organize the research that forms the basis of their writing. This work is documented by PowerNotes in a way that streamlines rather than intrudes on the learning process, yielding a number of benefits for both students and teachers. By expanding the method of authentication to include the research process, rather than the essay alone, we remove the dangers of false positives when identifying academic dishonesty.

Undoubtedly, there will be systems built to try to identify AI-generated content.  There will always be false positives, either due to technological limits, or because some students happen to write in a style that has AI-like characteristics. If we are able to examine the writing and research process, rather than just the final artifact, then both students and teachers are protected.

Introducing the PowerNotes Insight score

Our Insight score is calculated based on the work students put into PowerNotes: highlights, annotations, organizational structure, and the time it took to do all of those things. We compare this body of work against the student’s submitted paper, and a score is generated based on how correlated the two are. The higher the score, the greater the correlation.

Integrate PowerNotes with your LMS

Assign, view, and assess student work through your LMS and a secure PowerNotes dashboard.

Watch the Work Happen

Students can use PowerNotes to work on anything from low-stakes assignments to dissertations.

We compare student inputs against the final paper and generate a PowerNotes Insight score.

Power to the process.

PowerNotes sets itself apart with features focused on meaningful student engagement throughout the reading, research, analysis, and writing process.

Instructional Scaffolding

PowerNotes provides a pedagogically sound framework and efficient workflows for students, instructors, and researchers.

Rooted in Academia

Our team is working with leading academic institutions to develop Insight and to ensure that it meets the needs of the academic community now and into the future.

Critical Insights

Our patent-pending algorithm will provide educators with an Insight score so they can quickly determine which projects may need to be looked at more carefully. Projects with low scores will be flagged for review.

Explore Proof-of-Work

Educators can quickly assess a project's research and writing history to provide evidence of potential authorship issues. These histories can be referenced during academic code violation conversations.

Moving Forward Responsibly

We understand that AI and the idea of its use in academia can be polarizing and intimidating. We allow educators to choose exactly when and how AI is used in their coursework.

Cheaters Beware

Once students know that educators have a means of viewing coursework engagement, many will weigh the risks and consequences of cheating.

PowerNotes vs. AI Detectors

PowerNotes
AI Detectors

Unaffected by updated versions of AI language models

Obsolescence

May only detect AI writing from specific versions of the AI

Students would have to do "fake work," which defeats the purpose

Student Manipulation

Students may be able to fool the detector by changing words or adding errors

False positives can be rebutted by viewing students' work history

Accuracy

False positives will always be possible

Insight provides evidence or vindication of potential violations

Evidence

Unclear as to what (if any) evidence a detector will provide

Easily integrates with AI writing tools for future educational use

AI Integration

Unclear what the value of having a detector is if AI writing is part of the future

“Part of the worry about how students might use a tool like ChatGPT is rooted in an apparently pervasive belief that students would much rather cheat than do the work. I still believe students want to learn, but this means giving them something worth doing.”

John Warner

Writing Professor

On ChatGPT: “While the tool may be able to provide quick and easy answers to questions, it does not build critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for academic and lifelong success.”

New York City Department of Education

“Navigating a new world with ChatGPT may be challenging in some ways, but it also may provide faculty with opportunities to make their classrooms more inclusive and further improve student writing. If we view ChatGPT as a tool, rather than a threat, maybe (just maybe) a future world with ChatGPT will be a world with more “good” writers.”

Sarah Parsons, Hannah Davis, Rene Caputo, and Miranda Welsh

Duke Thompson Writing Program (TWP) Faculty

“If you can create an atmosphere where students are invested in learning, they are not going to reach for a workaround. They are not going to plagiarize. They are not going to copy, they are not going to dodge the work. But the work has to be worth doing on some level, beyond getting the grade.”

John Warner

Writing Professor

“Educators would do well to find a way not only to live with the technology but also to incorporate it into our pedagogies. Training students to become good critical readers and effective editors is an ambitious goal, one that will require a major shift for many of us, but it also is a challenge we would do well to embrace sooner rather than later.”
